In Victorian London, surgeon Frederick Treves comes across a sideshow attraction called "The Elephant Man." What he finds is a heavily disfigured man scraping a living working as a sideshow freak, and being mistreated by the man who considers himself his owner. Dr. Treves rescues the so called Elephant Man – whose real name is John Merrick – and takes him to the London Hospital. Behind his monstrous facade, there is revealed a person of intelligence and sensitivity.
A Jazz musician, tortured by the notion that his wife is being unfaithful, suddenly finds himself accused of her murder. A young mechanic is drawn into an affair with a woman who is cheating on her gangster boyfriend. The two stories are connected in a mysterious way – the two men might be the same man, the two women might be the same woman.

A woman with amnesia befriends a hopeful young actress who has come to the city in search of stardom, and the two set out on a search for answers that takes them to a place between dream and reality.
